In a previous post, I briefly touched on acquiring roses from a local grower. A man named Ron had to dispose of roses that his late mother had maintained on her property so that he could make room for his sister to move closer to him. He was saddened to see them go, but wanted to make sure that they went to individuals that truly cared for roses – as his mother did. He contacted the Fort Vancouver Rose Society and they sent a notice to members that roses were in need of a new home. During the same time period, I was building a catalog of roses that I wanted to get to finish off our yard. I wanted to get the classics. I called Ron expecting him to have maybe one or two, but boy did he have many more. He wasn’t sure exactly how many of the ones I was looking for he had left because some had already been dug up. I asked Ron if I dig them out same day if he would be willing for me to take the all. He agreed. Today, I am happy to report that of the 15 (really 14, but I split one at the roots to make a new plant) I dug up, 14 have survived. Below are some images of the beauties that Ron’s late mother grew and maintained. As a side note, Ron saw how excited I was and gifted me his mothers catalogue that she maintained to help me identify the roses I got from his family. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.
